Lead Mining Industry
Lead is one of the most useful of the nonferrous metals. In terms of tonnage used, it ranks after aluminum, steel, copper, and zinc. Its major uses are storage batteries, as an antiknock additive in gasoline, and in materials for the construction and metalworking industries. Other uses include ammunition, paints, and electrical cable sheathing.
Lead Mining and Beneficiation Operations
?In most lead mines, the ore is composed of a combination of lead and zinc sulfides and the concentrators recover both lead and zinc concentrates. Lead is derived from ores varying widely in lead content, from virtually zinc-free lead ores in Missouri, through the lead-zinc ores of the western states; to nearly lead-free zinc ores of the eastern U.S.
Except for a few mining operations scattered throughout the world, almost all of the lead and lead-zinc ores are produced from underground mines. In the southeast Missouri lead district, the common mining method oferta camisetas is a room-and-pillar system with oferta camisetas access by vertical shafts. Drilling for breaking the ore is done by self-propelled rubber-tired vehicles called jumbos carrying two or three percussion drills. Haulage from face to shaft is by load-haul-dump (LHD) rubber-tired units or by
